Development of virtual basic training refreshers

Maintenance on and of offshore wind turbines involves unique risks. In the Offshore Safety Refreshers project, ways to train safety awareness and behaviour during maintenance work offshore are being explored. This knowledge is necessary because help is often not available quickly at these locations. This project meets the need to train high-risk offshore maintenance scenarios to be better prepared for dangerous situations and safety incidents.

An inventory is made of maintenance activities and risky situations to determine the scenarios. In terms of technology, research is being done on how to develop a blended training methodology. This methodology includes mobile (app-based) learning and virtual reality experiences combined with practical training. These training courses have a two-year refresher requirement for offshore work. Partners TNO/ECN, GE, SMST, Snel Uitzendbureau, Rope Access Noord and STARK Learning innovate in making maintenance safety training available for offshore wind professionals.

These innovations are jointly developed in the data and simulation lab and include the following activities:

a) Inventory of high-risk offshore maintenance scenarios and situations, determine learning objectives
b) Research blended training method, deployment of mobile learning, VR and practical exercises

(c) Design and realisation of a virtual offshore wind farm as a training environment

d) Development of realistic virtual training scenarios
e) Development of Offshore Safety App and blended training formats
